Why you should be careful using popup boxes on your website

So when we’re designing a website, we’re always looking at what the client is looking to do.

No point in having a fancy design with loads of flashy things if it doesn’t help conversion in someway.

Which leads me to pop up boxes.

Now I don’t know about you, but these drive me mad, especially on mobile devices that take up the whole screen, and then for some reason you can’t seem to remove them because the box is bigger than the screen.

So now you’re turning your mobile device every which way in order to remove it, and in the end, you just end up clicking off.

So as always, with any type of question, the answer is ‘it depends’.

If the web PAGE is a landing page that’s designed to convert the person landing on it (and by convert I mean simply take the next step), then having an obtrusive pop up box really isn’t going to help, in fact, it will ruin your potential conversion rates.

Imagine having a product page that doesn’t convert just because there’s a pop up email subscription box that you can’t remove.

Far better to leave the box off that page so the user can focus on taking the next step, not being frustrated trying to remove a pop up box.

But also, this is not to say that we never have them.

But there is a time and a place for those pop up boxes, and they CAN work great for data collection (in return for giving away a free download of some kind).

Even better may well be a delayed pop up box, perhaps with a 30 second counter (or less if you’re finding people aren’t staying on the page that long – but please don’t do it on every page.

Imagine having to remove pop up boxes on every page you visit – the website visitor will simply go off the site and onto your competitors.
