What’s Actually Working in Digital Marketing Right Now (And It’s Not AI)

Six strategy sessions in one day on £15 of daily ad spend. That is what our marketing is producing for the agency right now, and the shift behind it has been dramatic. Here is what is actually working for our clients in 2026, why authenticity matters more than ever, and how transparent pricing is qualifying leads before they even pick up the phone.

The Shift

The shift nobody saw coming

Last week we had a strategy session with a flooring company. Their entire social media presence was built around an AI avatar. A computer-generated person talking to camera about why people should choose his flooring business. Slick on the surface, completely fake underneath, and it was quietly killing the brand.

Our recommendation was simple. Take it down, all of it. Because the moment a potential customer spots that the avatar is not human, every other piece of content on that profile loses credibility with them as well.

The data backs this up in a way that should make every business owner sit up and pay attention.

58% of consumers say they trust a brand less when they spot AI-generated content.

According to Klaviyo’s 2026 AI Consumer Trends report, 58% of consumers trust a brand less when they spot AI-generated content. Separate research from Emplifi found that 91% of consumers now expect brands to disclose when AI is being used, and 52% will stop buying from a brand entirely after a single inauthentic experience. That is over half the market gone after one whiff of fake.

Even more striking, a 2026 Gartner survey found that 50% of US consumers would prefer to give their business to brands that do not use generative AI in customer-facing messages, ads, or content. Half the buying public, walking away from brands the moment they spot the AI.

The agencies and businesses leaning hardest into AI-generated everything are not gaining an edge. They are quietly losing trust.

The Differentiator

Why authenticity is the new edge

Here is the part most marketing agencies will not tell you. AI has made it easier than ever to produce content at scale, which means content at scale is no longer the differentiator. Everyone has it. Everyone is doing it. Most of it looks the same.

What stands out now is the opposite of slick. Real people on real cameras talking about real things. The unedited bit. The stumble over a word. The dog walking past in the background. The lighting that is not quite perfect.

That is the gold standard, not because it is easier to produce, but because audiences can tell the difference and they are rewarding the brands that show up as themselves.

For our agency, that has meant a complete shift in how we approach client content marketing. We have actually cut back on the volume of content we produce, both for ourselves and for clients on full retainers. Less is more when each piece is genuinely human.

What Is Working

What is actually driving strategy sessions right now

Today the agency has six strategy sessions booked in. Six. In a single day.

A year ago, six in a week was a good week. Six in a day is honestly overwhelming, and the cause of the shift is not content marketing. It is paid advertising.

£15 per day

in Facebook Ads spend, generating six strategy calls in a day

Our daily Facebook Ads spend on the lead generation campaign is roughly £15. That is not a typo. Fifteen pounds a day. The ads themselves are deliberately basic. No flashy creative, no clever copy, just the message, the offer, and the price.

The advert has three jobs:

  • Tell people what we do
  • Tell people what it costs
  • Make it stupidly easy to book a strategy call

That is it. No tricks, no agency-speak about “synergistic growth solutions” or whatever other corporate filler people lean on these days. Just the offer and the path.

Here is the bit that catches most agencies out. We show the prices upfront. From £297 per month for an introductory month, £397 per month after that, and a full marketing team Growth Engine package at £997 per month. Nothing hidden.

The Hidden Pricing Problem

Why hiding your prices costs you the right clients

Walk into any agency website right now and look for the prices. Most of the time you will not find them. You will find “Book a discovery call” or “Contact us for a custom quote”. You will find decorative language designed to make you feel like the agency is selective, premium, and exclusive.

That is not premium positioning. That is hiding.

The reason agencies hide their prices is almost always the same. They are expensive, they know you would walk away if you saw the number before talking to a sales person, so they make you book a call first and run a script to convince you the price is reasonable.

Buyers can tell. They have been trained by transparent ecommerce, transparent SaaS pricing, transparent everything. When an agency hides the price, the buyer instinctively wonders what else is being hidden, and that is exactly the same level of inauthenticity we just talked about with AI content.

When we put the price on the advert itself, two things happen.

First, people who cannot afford the service self-select out. They never click the ad. That saves them time, it saves us time, everyone wins.

Second, the people who do click already know roughly what they are getting into. They land on a page that reinforces the price and the offer, they fill in a short qualification form, and by the time the strategy session starts they are already most of the way to a yes. That is why six strategy sessions in one day is even possible. The leads coming in are pre-qualified by the ad itself.

The Content Role

Content still has a job, just a different one

This is not an argument for switching off your content marketing. Far from it. Content still has a critical job, just not the one most people think.

When someone sees the ad, clicks through, and starts taking you seriously, they research you. They head to your website, they check your YouTube, they look at your LinkedIn. They want to know if you are the real deal.

If they find a steady stream of authentic content (videos of you talking, real client stories, actual opinions, things that show up consistently over time) it reinforces their decision to click that ad in the first place. The content does not generate the lead. The content closes the lead the ad already generated.

Think about it this way:

  • Paid ads do the heavy lifting on lead generation
  • Authentic content does the heavy lifting on conversion and trust
  • SEO compounds over time as buyers search for what you do
  • Each plays a specific role, working together

The Action Plan

What this means for your business

If you are a UK SME owner reading this, the question you should be asking is not “Should I be using more AI?”. The question is “Where in my marketing am I being inauthentic, and where am I hiding things from prospects?”.

A few honest checks to run on your own marketing:

Are you using AI avatars or fully AI-generated videos on your social media? If yes, take them down. They are doing more damage than good.

Are your prices hidden behind “Contact us for a quote”? If yes, put a starting price on your site. Even “From £X” with a caveat that bespoke quotes vary gives people a number to anchor against.

Are you producing content because you genuinely have something to say? Or because someone told you to post five times a week regardless of value? Cut the volume, keep the quality.

Are your ads designed to be clever and slick? Or designed to communicate the offer? Strip the clever, lead with the offer.

This is the marketing playbook that is working in 2026. Real beats slick, transparent beats hidden, and less content done properly beats more content done poorly.

FAQ

Should I stop using AI completely in my marketing?

No. AI is brilliant for behind-the-scenes work like analysing data, drafting first versions of copy you then edit heavily, segmenting email lists, and operational efficiency. The line to hold is customer-facing. If a buyer can see the AI, you are losing trust. Use AI in the back office and keep humans on camera.

How much should I be spending on Facebook Ads?

Less than you think. Our agency runs lead generation on roughly £15 per day. The amount matters less than the offer, the ad creative, and the landing page. Start small, test what works, then scale spend on the campaigns that produce real leads. Spending more on a broken funnel just produces more expensive bad leads.

Will putting my prices on my website scare clients away?

It scares away the wrong clients, which is the point. The right clients see your price, decide it is in their budget, and start the conversation already half-sold. The clients you lose by showing prices were never going to buy anyway. Save yourself and them the time.

How often should I post content if I am cutting back on volume?

There is no universal answer, but quality consistently beats quantity. Two to three genuinely useful posts a week from a real human will outperform daily AI-generated filler every time. Build a rhythm you can actually sustain rather than chasing a posting schedule that forces you into low-effort content.

What is the biggest mistake businesses are making with AI in marketing right now?

Using AI to imitate humans. AI avatars, AI-generated faces, AI-narrated videos pretending to be a real person. Consumers can spot these almost every time now, and the moment they do, every other piece of your marketing loses credibility. If you would not put a stock photo of a fake person on your About page, do not put an AI avatar in your videos.
