What SEO isn’t


The key to getting to the top of the search engines is consistency.  Doing the right thing on a regular basis.

Success then, is a habit, I can’t remember who said it first – Napolean Hill perhaps – but it’s true – doing the right things on a regular basis will provide the little baby steps that will carry you in the right direction.

SO the question is, what are the right steps to get your website SEO’d and to the top of the search engine rankings.


Well, first, let me tell you what SEO isn’t.

It’s not spamming backlinks, hundreds and hundreds of them all over the place.  This will actually end up hurting your website, as Google knows what you’re up to. Our friends at Google are very clever of course, and they’ve been around quite some time in the history of search engines – and lets face it, they have a lot of money to throw around to pay for people to think about this stuff.


Let me tell you what else it isn’t.  It;s not keyword stuffing as many keywords onto a page, in the title tags and so on – its a very, very bad thing to be doing, and again it wont help you.

Google likes new, fresh content, that makes sense to people as well as search engines.

Actually, this is the stuff you need to be creating to get to the top of Google, lots of regular fresh content that’s keyword rich, and has a meaning for your target audience.

Google is in the business of providing RELEVANT information for it’s search users – and if your content is RELEVANT then its not going to get listed for your keywords.

Yes, I know content creation takes a long time to implement, and lets face it, if you have ever outsourced it to an overseas company, what you get back isn’t exactly brilliant is it !

We’ve been there too, and what we realised was that if we wanted good quality content, it had to be written by someone in the UK, not Outer Mongolia, regardless as to how cheap it is.

“Buy it cheap, buy it twice” was a saying one of my old bosses used to say.

So lets assume you now have regular fresh content, what do you do with it.

well, there are a couple of things first of all.

1. upload it to your website : Google loves fresh new content, and the more fresh new content you create (lets assume one article a day shall we) then the more Google will pop by and check to see if you have new content.

This means that the spiders/robots jump on your website and interogate it, and when they do that they add any new content to their database, including working out what the keywords for that article actually are.

So that the next time a person searches for something thats RELEVENT (that word again) – it might, just might put your fresh new content at the top of the search results.  Wouldnt that be nice.

2. Create a video out of it : We create a number of videos these days, and we upload them to YouTube and we get them ranked for our keywords.  We’re pretty good at it (If you’re watching this on YouTube – then you’ve proven the point!)

Not everyone wants to sit and read what you create – some folks would prefer to just jump on Youtube and watch the content being presented.

3. Create an MP3 out of it : If you’ve got the video, then extracting the MP3 is a simple process, and now people can listen to you in the car, on the road, on the traing or bus, or even on a plane.

4. Create a .PDF out of it : Creating your content into a .pdf and then asking people to stick it on their website as a free download is a great idea – this does a number of things.
Firstly, it gets your links to your website embedded in the .pdf and then hosted on someone else’s site – this is a backlink in the eyes of Google – and it likes it.  Also, the link is surrounded by your keywords (or anchor text as we call them).

The other thing this does of course is it provides you with an opportunity to get found by new customers, on someone elses website.  Is that cool or what?  I must admit, the more I think about it, the more I think we should be doing MORE .pdf’s ourselves (Whoever said all coach was self-coaching was spot on by the way!)

5. Ask your contacts if they would like fresh new content for their Email Newsletters : Many people create email newsletters these days (you do too right?). Well, they’re always on the lookout for a way to get content written so that they don’t have to.
You have a perfect opportunity to ask around and get your content posted on their email newsletter.  Again, this has two really good results.

Firstly, if they send the email out to their list, they sometimes host a copy of the email newsletter on their website – which means that you’re getting a link back to your own website too from theirs – yep – another backlink.

Secondly, it again introduces you to a new range of potential clients who click the link and sign up for your stuff (You send them to a landing page right ?)

So there you have it, some great ideas for creating content and getting it distributed.  Do this, and you’ll start to see your traffic increasing.  I know it can take time, and that’s where we can help you.
