The Story

Why I Built This

I do VAT calculations every single day. Adding it on for invoices. Taking it off when I'm checking supplier prices. Working out what the actual cost is on a quote.

And for years, I'd Google "VAT calculator" and end up on someone else's website. Pop ups everywhere. Ads down the side. Half the time you'd type the number, then hit enter, then click a button to switch from adding VAT to removing VAT, then start again.

One day it clicked. Why am I sending traffic to other people's sites when I could just build my own?

So here it is.

What's Different About This One

It shows both numbers at the same time. Add VAT on the left. Remove VAT on the right. Type once, see everything.

No enter key. No buttons to click. No switching between modes. The numbers update as you type.

Fewer keystrokes. Less faff. Just the answer.

How To Use It

Type your figure into the box. The default VAT rate is 20%, but you can drop it down to 5% or 0% if you need to.

The left card treats your number as the net price and shows what it becomes once VAT is added. The right card treats it as the gross price and works backwards to show the net.

That's it. Bookmark the page and use it whenever you need it.

A Quick Note On The Maths

To add 20% VAT, you multiply by 1.2. To remove 20% VAT, you divide by 1.2 (not 0.8, which catches a lot of people out). The calculator handles both for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current UK VAT rate?

The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. There is also a reduced rate of 5% (for things like home energy and children's car seats) and a zero rate of 0% (for most food, books, and children's clothing). The 20% rate has been in place since January 2011.

How do I add 20% VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. So £100 net becomes £120 gross. The VAT portion is £20. The calculator above does this on the left card the moment you type a figure.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by 1.2. So £120 gross becomes £100 net. A common mistake is to multiply by 0.8 instead, which gives the wrong answer. £120 multiplied by 0.8 is £96, not £100. Always divide by 1.2 to remove 20% VAT.

What is the UK VAT registration threshold?

You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. You also need to register if you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. The deregistration threshold is £88,000.

What are the different UK VAT rates?

There are three main rates. Standard rate at 20% applies to most goods and services. Reduced rate at 5% covers things like domestic gas and electricity, children's car seats, and some energy-saving materials. Zero rate at 0% covers most food, books, newspapers, and children's clothing. Some items are exempt from VAT altogether, such as insurance and most financial services.

Can I claim back the VAT I pay?

Only if you're VAT-registered. Once registered, you can reclaim VAT on most things you buy for the business. You charge VAT on what you sell, reclaim VAT on what you buy, and pay HMRC the difference. If you're not registered, you cannot claim VAT back.

Is this VAT calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free. No sign up, no email capture, no ads. Bookmark it and use it as often as you need.
