Sprinting at 52 & the Power of Health

Published by Daniel Latto Content Team

The look of disbelief the face of the 25 year year old when you beat him in a 100 metre sprint

I'm 52 of course, and this Granddad is kicking these youngsters butts.

But did you know that 95% of people over the age of 30 will NEVER sprint ever again ?

I know it's not necessarily a skill you will need unless you find yourself in some kind of incident that you need to resolve.

But the ability to sprint comes with different benefits, such as

1. You get to live longer
2. You get to live a more functional life
3. You get to look behind you mid sprint and give them a smile

Fuck yeah !!!

Warriors - that's what we should be.
- Warriors in health.
- Warriors in Spirit.
- Warriors in Wealth.

All of it is important. And what most people end up doing is they stay in one of those lanes (health, spirit and wealth) ONLY only to find the other 2 have gone to shit.

And as we get older, what we think we want actually changes.

It's gone from fancy Porsche 911 convertibles and penthouse living, with BIG Friday and Saturday nights getting shitfaced, and turned into

- a more peaceful life
- being more content with where you are and what you've achieved
- wanting to help others on their journey more, especially when it comes to mental wellbeing and coping mechanisms
- choosing what work you want to do, rather than having to do
- working on your body and therefore your mental wellbeing (A good workout drags your mental wellbeing out of negativity anyway)

And of course, there's so much more to it than that.

It's weird, because on one hand, we talk about mental wellbeing, and in society, it's much more accepted to talk about, and yet, most people literally do nothing about it.

- They don't workout.

- They stay in toxic relationships.

- They eat shitty food (I can guarantee the quality of your food will directly relate to the quality of your thoughts - SUGAR especially)

- They do a jo that doesnt inspire them

And yet 'mental wellbeing' is always such a passive topic it seems.

On training courses Ive done, they talk about achieving goals, and then 'here comes the mental positivity bit' which basically comprises of

- dont give up
- keep going
- life is hard, but what else we gonna do
- keep going

Which on it's own, isn't bad advice, but that's akin to saying weight loss is "move more, eat less" when we know for a fact that mentally, it's far more complicated than that.
Being positive, looking after your own mental wellbeing, compartmentalising the negative thoughts we have - all of that takes a LOT of work, and it also takes hours in the day, not seconds or minutes to 'be positive'.

And the best way to get there is to workout.

For example, this mornings crossfit session included

Sprint, rope climbs, push presses with barbell, dumbell snatches, 30" box jumps, 1 legged broad jumps, skipping, running, sandbag cleans and the rowing machine.

Try being depressed after that little lot, and I think you'll find it very difficult - and that took a whole hour (and then some as its 2nd shower of the day, change of clothes, getting there etc)

But it's done, and it's done daily, because the alternative is negative toughts that invade your mind and a lack of self control in dealing with them.

Plus ... you get to kick these young whippersnappers into shape when you beat them
