On average how much does a website cost ?

Published by Daniel Latto Content Team

There are 2 ways to determine how much a website will cost

  1. willingness-to-pay and
  2. cost-plus models.

Let’s look at both of those and see how we compare

1. Customer Willingness-to-Pay

Customers’ willingness to pay for a website design varies according to their needs and the complexity of the project. The following are various ranges of costs based on the customer’s requirement:

  • 1 page Basic Website: £100 per year
  • Brochure Website with a Freelancer/Agency: WordPress (£750 to £4,000), Hand Coded (£3,000 to £7,000)
  • E-Commerce Website with a Freelancer/Agency: WordPress (£1,000 to £12,500), Hand Coded (£5,000 to £25,000)
  • Custom-Built Website: £650 to £42,000

Our website costs start at just £395, and for that you get a great looking website – you can take a look at examples here – Case Studies

2. Cost-Plus Models

a. Freelancer Rates

  • Offshore Web Company: £10 – £25 per hour – NOT recommended due to issues with language and styles of websites (think 1990’s blaring colours !)
  • Freelance Web Designer: £25 – £50 per hour – which also means any little update means another £25 to £50 an hour at least.

b. Agency Rates

  • Small Web Agency: £50 – £75 per hour.
  • Large Web Agency: £75 – £150 per hour

c. Additional Costs

  • Domain: From £12.99/year
  • Hosting: £4.99 – £44.99/month dependent on what you get.  The worst, slowest hosting with no customer service is NOT what you need to be running your business on right now !
  • Maintenance: £59.99/year (This includes things like an SSL Certificate which ALL websites need)

Optimum Pricing Strategy

Considering both the willingness-to-pay and cost-plus models, the optimum pricing strategy would be to evaluate the your requirements, complexity of the website, and designer’s experience.

While other agencies express higher prices with additional services and support, our own agency hates all that.

Why pay a lot for a website when you don’t need to ?

How about a DIY website like Wix ?
It’s a BIG no.  Again, why would you run your business on the cheapest form of website design, designed by someone (you!) who has no idea about website design?

So for basic or DIY websites, the cost is obviously minimal (and so is the quality), and for more complex projects, a professional with corresponding hourly rates would be appropriate.

For example, for a basic brochure website using WordPress, a freelancer charging around £750 would be reasonable, keeping in mind the overhead costs and additional fees for hosting and domain.

For a large-scale eCommerce website, an agency might charge upwards of £12,500, providing a comprehensive package of design, content, security, and marketing services.

The optimum pricing strategy must consider both customer demand and the costs involved in creating the website, taking into account the specific nature of the project, the client’s budget, and the level of expertise required.

At the end of the day, we don’t charge anywhere like these prices, yet still have a fabulous web design team with many decades of experience.
